NATIONAL CANOE DAY - 26 June, 2009
HOW DID IT ALL START?
In the spring of 2007, a national poll conducted by CBC Radio and TV voted the canoe as one of the Seven Wonders of Canada. The CCM convened an impromptu party at the Peterborough Lift Lock inviting people to come with their canoes for a festive ride in the Lift Lock with music and cake. That event was such a success that the idea of an annual event to celebrate the canoe as a wonder of Canada was proposed. So was born National Canoe Day, to be held on June 26th each year during the Celebrate Canada! period leading up to Canada Day.
A call went across the country that invited individuals, families and organizations to join the celebration by doing something with/in/on/beside their canoe, and to register their activity/event with at the National Canoe Day website www.nationalcanoeday.net.
For 2009, The Canadian Canoe Museum is again issuing a national call to individuals and organizations to celebrate National Canoe Day on Friday, June 26th. The goal for 2009 is to grow National Canoe Day activities to 100 events from coast to coast to to coast. Events can be registered at www.nationalcanoeday.net.
NATIONAL CANOE DAY IS COMING!
If you have an idea for an activity, please let us know about it at president@canoekayaknb.org.

Canoe-kayak NB paddling project for 2008
Canoe-kayak New Brunswick, with assistance from the NB Department of Sport and Recreation, is sponsoring a project to encourage the creation of local paddling clubs. This initiative uses CKNB instructors and is headlined by the River Runners Canoeing Club of south eastern NB. This club is one of the most active and successful paddling groups in Atlantic Canada.
For upcoming club presentations, please contact:
- Noel: 506-382-2127
- Beatrice: 506-658-0434, or
- Gig: 506-832-4421
Watch for dates for potential presentations elsewhere in the province. There are incentives for getting your club active in 2008.
Once successfully formed, your club may apply from time to time for grants directly through the Regional Offices of Service NB. Each club can pursue its own interests from sedate birding, photography or camping canoe-trips to skills certification clinics. In 2008 CKNB will help new clubs with instruction clinics; and membership in CKNB as a club provides access to inexpensive liability insurance.
